Crack – The Dark Heart of Rio

The path of many crack consumers is marked by poverty, violence and all sort of difficulties. Even with the work of some social groups as some evangelical churches, local volunteers and government actions, that provide some useful help to diminish this extreme life condition. To interfere in this life context, is required urgent and powerful adoptions of policies of reinsertion of this people into public services like health public care, sewage disposal, labor market and others. This dark side on the heart of Rio de Janeiro still is going on day and night on the streets of the city.

Vangela Melo da Silva, 32-year-old, is addict in crack. She smokes the drug under a footbridge in a slum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - February 26, 2013, where others drug addicts stay all day and night consuming all sort of drugs. Addict for at least three years, Vangela, expends her money that she earns with house cleaning and prostitution. She is also know by the name Priscila and lives in a slum of Rio sharing a poor house with another woman. Her three children live in another city. Her husband was a drug dealer and died after have been arrested for robery. She says that she wants to stops to use drugs and start a simple life selling cookies on the streets. Photo Leo Correa
